Saxophonist Harvey Pittel Will Perform At The January 12 Chamber Concert
Join us on January 12, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. for the La Mirada Symphony’s “Chamber Concert for a Sunday Afternoon” at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. This free concert will feature intimate performances by small musical ensembles, offering a unique and personal musical experience. Renowned saxophonist Harvey Pittel will be among the featured artists, bringing his exceptional talent to the stage.
Pittel has performed extensively across North America. He served as the Professor of Saxophone at the University of Texas at Austin’s Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music, making a lasting impact on aspiring musicians.
Early Musical Beginnings
Pittel started his musical journey at age seven at Clifford Street Elementary School in Los Angeles, California. After high school, he pursued a degree in Music Education at the University of Southern California. To further refine his skills, he earned a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from Northwestern University, studying under Fred Hemke.
During the Vietnam War, Pittel enlisted in the Navy and joined the West Point Military Academy Band. While serving, he continued his studies with Joe Allard of the Juilliard School, which helped shape his unique style. After leaving the West Point Band, he won the prestigious Concert Artists Guild Competition. This victory led to his Carnegie Hall debut in 1971, where he received such high praise that he was invited back in 1973 for another performance.
Teaching and Touring Career
After completing his military service, Pittel began teaching saxophone at USC. He later expanded his teaching roles to include Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State San Diego, East Los Angeles Junior College, and the University of Texas at Austin. Alongside his teaching career, Pittel actively toured with the Harvey Pittel Duo, Trio, and Saxophone Quartet, mesmerizing audiences with his versatility.
High-Profile Performances and Awards
Pittel has appeared on several notable platforms, including movie soundtracks like Manhattan for Woody Allen, The Today Show, and Live from Lincoln Center. His exceptional talent earned him two grants from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund and a National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist grant.
