La Mirada Symphony October 2012 Highlights
October was a Big Month for the La Mirada Symphony. The Golden Island Gala on the 13th was a fun and successful event. Over 80 people walked up the stairs at the Dale Tiffany Showroom and entered a tropical paradise. Okay, that’s a vast exaggeration, but the tropical theme, great food, Polynesian dancers, and auctions made for a terrific evening. We raised about $4,000. A big thank you to all the supporters who made it possible!
Celebration of Nature Concerts
The Celebration of Nature Concerts began on Oct. 23 when approximately 1,500 fifth graders were bused from the Norwalk-LaMirada schools to hear their first notes of classical music. High school sophomore Emily Wang gave a masterful presentation of a complex piece by Mendelsohn. The students listened quietly and applauded enthusiastically.
The October 27th evening concert was a grand success with over 900 people in attendance. Dr. Frelly and the symphony musicians brought the music to life. Audience members especially enjoyed knowing the background of each selection. Concert mistress, Regan Lambert, did an excellent job of creating a braying donkey with her violin for the opening of “On the Trail” from the Grand Canyon Suite. The big brass finish to “The Pines of Rome” ended the evening on a triumphant note.
A Changing of the Guard
The outgoing Association President, Pat Ruiz dedicated the concert. During intermission, Ruiz was honored with a plaque and flowers. Pat said a few gracious words and was warmly greeted by patrons at the after-concert reception.
